US Escalates Naval Operations Against Iran With Expanded Blockade

The United States has ramped up its naval enforcement efforts targeting Iran, with American forces conducting an expanded campaign to restrict maritime access to Iranian territorial waters.

The US Central Command announced through social media that as of July 20, American military personnel had redirected seven commercial vessels and rendered one ship inoperable, with the explicit goal of preventing maritime traffic from reaching or departing Iranian ports. These operations involve personnel stationed aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, which continues to coordinate air support missions throughout the Arabian Sea on a continuous basis.

The naval campaign represents part of a broader American military presence in the region designed to monitor shipping movements and enforce restrictions on Iran. Beginning July 14, the United States initiated a comprehensive blockade encompassing all Iranian ports and coastal territories.

Under the framework established by the Joint Maritime Information Center, which operates under US Navy leadership, the blockade encompasses vessels flying any national flag. However, officials clarified that the restrictions would not prevent neutral vessels from transiting the Strait of Hormuz toward non-Iranian destinations. The command also indicated that humanitarian shipments would be permitted passage, contingent upon inspection protocols being satisfied.
